Essay on Search for Identity in Amy Tans The Joy Luck Club
Search for Identity in Joy Luck Club à à à Each person reaches a point in their life when they begin to search for their own, unique identity. In her novel, Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan follows Jing Mei on her search for her Chinese identity ââ¬â an identity long neglected. à Four Chinese mothers have migrated to America. Each hope for their daughterââ¬â¢s success and pray that they will not experience the hardships faced in China. One mother, Suyuan, imparts her knowledge on her daughter through stories. The American culture influences her daughter, Jing Mei, to such a degree that it is hard for Jing Mei to understand her mother's culture and life lessons. Yet it is not until Jing Mei realizes that the key to understanding who her mother was and who she is lies in understanding her mother's life. à Jing Mei spends her American life trying to pull away from her Chinese heritage, and therefore also ends up pulling away from her mother. Jing Mei does not understand the culture and does not feel it is necessary to her life. When she grows up it is not "fashionable" to be called by your Chinese name (Tan 26). She doesn't use, understand, or remember the Chinese expressions her mother did, claiming she "can never remember things [she] didn't understand in the first place" (Tan 6). Jing Mei "begs" her mother "to buy [her] a transistor radio", but her mother refuses when she remembers something from her past, asking her daughter "Why do you think you are missing something you never had?" (Tan 13) Instead of viewing the situation from her mother's Chinese-influenced side, Jing Mei takes the juvenile American approach and "sulks in silence for an hour" (Tan 13). By ignoring her mom and her mom's advice, Jing Mei is also ignoring... ...Jing Mei realizes the part of her that is Chinese is her family. She must embrace the memory of her dead mother to grasp that part of her identity. à Works Cited and Consulted: Gates, David. Critical Extract. Asian-American Women Writers. Ed. Harold Bloom. Alice Walkerââ¬â¢s the Welcome Table Essay
Alice Walkerââ¬â¢s The Welcome Table is a short story that gives a historical and cultural look at how segregation in the south influenced peopleââ¬â¢s lives. The story portrays an old black woman as the main character. It has plot, setting, characters, symbolism, theme, tone and imagery that the author skillfully narrated in the third person omniscient point of view to create the story. The reader experiences an insight into behavior that was caused by segregation in the State of Georgia in the south. ââ¬Å"The reverend of the church stopped her pleasantly as she stepped into the vestibuleâ⬠¦..â⬠Aunty, you know this is not your church?â⬠â⬠¦.Inside the church she sat on the very first bench from the back.â⬠(Clugston, 2010) Head of the congregation the reverend instigates the act of religious segregation and without further prompting; his congregants willingly follows. The story also portrays the church peopleââ¬â¢s mindset to maintain religious segre gation even in the act of worship. ââ¬Å"They looked with contempt â⬠¦.at the old womanâ⬠¦could their husbands expect them to sit up in church with that? No, noâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Clugston, 2010) The narrator uses strong descriptions to recreate the era and to pull the reader into the story. It really shows how segregation influences people in their everyday life. Black slaves were freed. However, black and white people remained segregated because segregation was the way of life for the people during that period in Georgia. The system of segregation demanded that black people had to sit in the back of public busses and the old woman in the story knew her place because she freely sat at the back of the church. ââ¬Å"Inside the church she sat on the very first bench from the back,â⬠(Clugston, 2010). Religious segregation is the main theme. The song at the beginning of the story sets the tone and pulls the reader into the south where ex-slaves sang Negro spirituals for comfort. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to sit at the Welcome table; Shout my troubles over; Walk and talk with Jesus; Tell God how you treat me; One of these days!â⬠(Clugston, 2010) Religious segregation was a major part of the culture in Georgia and it is the theme of this story; in that the author details the harsh cold manner in which it affects people. The spiritual at the beginning points to hope to one day experience welcome (acceptance), to sit and talk with Jesus who both the blacks and whites are worshipping but cannot do so under the same roof. In other words, the song is an expression of hope that segregation will end. The black old woman braves freezing temperature, without warm enough clothing to go to the house of worship. Winter represents death, stagnation and sleep (Clugston, 2010) and the old black woman represents slavery. The black old woman, symbolizing slavery is almost blind and almost dead. Yet she is determined to struggle through the freezing cold to push past the reverend, and ignore the young usher to seat herself in the whites only church. ââ¬Å"She brushed past him anyway, as if she had been brushing past him all her life, except this time she was in a hurry. Inside the church she satâ⬠¦It was cold, even inside the churchâ⬠¦.â⬠This act by the dying old black woman is symbolic of the ex-slavesââ¬â¢ struggle to conquer the final frontier of segregation more so religious segregation. The author uses symbolism in this case to represent the peopleââ¬â¢s behavior towards the old woman and her determination to have her way. The Author skillfully uses imagery to tell a powerful story The Welcome Table. The very beginning paints a picture of the main character. ââ¬Å"In her Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes:â⬠¦.head rag stained with grease from the many oily pigtails underneath,â⬠What seems like a simple description of her clothes contained words that contributed to the painting of the picture. Then on the other hand the ladies of the church required a different set of adjectives. ââ¬Å"Leather bagged and shoed, with calfskin gloves to keep out the coldâ⬠¦.This done, the wives folded their healthy arms across their trim middlesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This vivid contrast also represents the religious disparity between the black people and the white people even though they are both worshipping the same god. ââ¬Å"The reverend of the church stopped her pleasantly as she stepped into the vestibuleâ⬠¦..â⬠Aunty, you know this is not your church?â⬠â⬠¦.Inside the church she sat on the very first bench from the back.â⬠(Clugston, 2010) The black old woman, symbolizing slavery is almost blind and almost dead. Why Is Today s World So Polluted - 1506 Words
This Polluted World 8 billion people call this planet home today, and what have we done to it. We have made the planet grow for good and for bad. We have made advances that have changed the world but the process to making these advances are not always good. The world has gone through some serious change in the recent history of the planet. Burning of fossil fuels, unregulated methods of productions, and rapid industrialization of cities. India in the 1700ââ¬â¢s was under control of the British Government and demand made them industrialize very rapidly with no regulations to control pollution. The same thing is happening to China now with the need for resources which causes rise in population which means higher demand for resources, an endless circle. But what causes these changes to happen and so rapidly. Why is todayââ¬â¢s world so polluted? India while under the rule of the British Government was under high demand to industrialize and produce goods for England. During the 1700ââ¬â¢s England was ramping up too. the production of goods, and creating factories from which caused a lot of air pollution and ground pollution in these two countries. In history, a civilization can only expand if they have the resources necessary to grow. In the early 1926 an article was posted in the London times about the availability of brown coal. A large amount of brown coal was found in England but the country already had a large supply of coal from other sources so it did not affect them as much. Dr.Show MoreRelatedMackenzie Jurosko. Realism, the Portray of Women Mistreatment Free Essays
Realism, the Portray of Women Mistreatment In the 19th century a new trend of writing appeared in the American literature called, realism and it is defined as the ââ¬Å"faithful representation of realityââ¬â¢. Writers attempt to document life as it ââ¬Å"without romantic idealization or dramatizationâ⬠and ââ¬Å"character is more important than action and plotâ⬠. Two short stories are representative of realism ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Story of An Hour. We will write a custom essay sample on Realism, the Portray of Women Mistreatment or any similar topic only for you Order Now â⬠In these stories Charlotte Gilman and Kate Chopin characterize women who are being dominated by a manly society nd who do not see women more than a simply spouses or mothers. However, they are faithful believers that women in reality are beings that should be allowed to express themselves because they are strong enough to stand for themselves; and should not be subordinate in any marriage. Likewise, in these two stories the realism portrays the maltreatment of women in their marriage, which clearly can be seen develop in the plot, characterization, setting, and theme of the stories. The works of realism are present in the plot of both stories. Throughout the story of ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠her husband John treats the protagonist with a lot of authority and demand. ââ¬Å"John says if I donââ¬â¢t pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fallâ⬠¦ But John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad. (Gilman, 86-90. ). And this overwhelming treatment carried the poor woman to a deep insanity, making her hallucinate about the paper design of her room. ââ¬Å"It is the strangest yellow, that wall-paper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever sawâ⬠not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old oul, bad yellow thingsâ⬠¦ Through watching so much at night, when it changes so, I have finally found out. The front pattern does moveâ⬠and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it! Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over. â⬠(Gilman, 95, 96. ). The husbandââ¬â¢s controlling attitude and low ignorance against her destroyed this woman mental stability. At the same time in ââ¬Å"The Story of An Hour,â⬠Mrs. Mallard thought that the death of Mr. Mallard would be the opportunity or her to get out from an oppressed marriage that didnââ¬â¢t let her live the life that she ever dreamed. For the first time in her life, she could visualize herself without the control and pressure that her marriage gave her. ââ¬Å"There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfullyâ⬠¦ But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome. â⬠(Chopin, 66-67. ). In these two stories we can see the great desire of these women to be treated with respect; a ense of dignity for what they are, something that would make them feel like their voice counted rather than having a meaning to their life because of who theyre married to. Moreover, the women of these stories are truthful realistic characters. The narrator of ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠it is a docile, ââ¬Å"ordinaryââ¬â¢ (Gilman, 85. middle class woman who suffered from a ââ¬Å"temporary nervous depressionâ⬠(Gilman, 85). She is forbidden to work and writes in her Journal, which she enjoys very much. She is also torbi dden to take care ot ner newborn baby and visit any triends, making ner eel like no control over her life. ââ¬Å"Am absolutely forbidden to ââ¬Å"workâ⬠until I am well againâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"There comes John, and I must put this away, â⬠he hates to have me write a wordâ⬠¦ And yet I cannot be with him (baby), it makes me so nervousâ⬠â⬠¦ (Gilman, 85-87-88. ). The main character of this story is an oppressed woman, who could not escape from her reality and in real life a vast of women around the world go through this kind of situation. For instance, my mother is one of them, for many years she undergoes from a temporary nervous depression, caused by my little brotherââ¬â¢s birth. My father labeled himself a very wise man, but never looked for the help she needed to. As well, he prohibited her to work and the only thing that she could do was to take care of houseââ¬â¢s chores. Couple times in my life I saw my own mother in the edge of the madness that her monotony life and my father little comprehension about her illness carried her. I remembered, myself scare at her and crying because I did not understand why she behaved in those manner and why my father was so authoritarian with all of us; and with so low emotion about my mother situation. One day my mother woke up from her dream and decides that she had to take control of her life and run away from him, leaving my little brother and me in his cares. I strongly believed that many women around the world, most of the time married the wrong man, because they cannot understand them and do not make them feel valuable as their marital partner. On the other hand, in ââ¬Å"The Story of An Hour,â⬠Mrs. Mallard is another typical middle class woman that has ââ¬Å"loved her husband sometimesâ⬠(Chopin, 67. ), but with a ââ¬Å"certain strengthâ⬠(Chopin, 67. ) that all she anted is to ââ¬Å"drink a very elixir of lifeâ⬠, (Chopin, 68. ). And who suffers from heart problem, that probably her outrage marriage had left her with ââ¬Å"Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart troubleâ⬠¦ â⬠(Chopin, 66. ). In fact, Mrs. Mallard is an intelligence woman with a great desire of living her life without any attachments and a visionary woman that proved that she did not need any man to stand up for her. As an illustration, Mrs. Mallard story is similar to my cousin Birmaniaââ¬â¢s story. She is also a very intelligent woman, who married her boyfriend whom she was for a long time. After the wedding, they got a beautiful house, equipped with a lot nice furniture. Her boyfriend (now her husband), as soon they got married prohibited her to work. At first, she was happy with the idea because she used to love him and she wanted to play a wifeââ¬â¢s roles. Times passed and her monotonic life started hit her and her husbandââ¬â¢s behavior was not what she dreamed about, she felt she wanted to escape from him and divorced him. He, otherwise did not accept her idea, he thought that could not be possible because he had always give her all the material thing that she ad wanted; house, money and car. But, in reality she needed more than that. Birmania needed more emotional attention; she wanted to work, to be herself, once for all. Eventually, how many women nowadays are yet bowed in the oppression of their marriages? As well as the plot and characterization, these two stories share realistic settings. Both take place in the United States during the 19th century and fully described the surrounding of their main characters. For example, in the ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠the story take place in a summerââ¬â¢s house, specifically in the narratorââ¬â¢s room. She does not have lot furniture on it, except for a bed, the barred around the window and the ââ¬Å"queerâ⬠(Gilman, 85. ) yellow wallpaper. Iââ¬â¢m really getting quite tond ot the big room, all but that horrid paperâ⬠¦ It is a big, airy room, the whole floor nearly, with windows that look all ways, and air and sunshine galore. It was nursery first and then playroom and gymnasium, I should Judge; for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls. ââ¬Å"(Gilman, 87-88. ). Consequently, ââ¬Å "The Story of An Hourâ⬠happened in the Mrs. Mallardââ¬â¢s house mostly in er room, where she sat in a chair to contemplate the outside windows landscape and dreamed about her future. She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chairâ⬠¦ A dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection. ââ¬Å"(Chopin, 66-67. ). The ironic reality in the settings of theses stories is that even though the environment illustrated for these women were a comfortable life, nice houses and neighborhood, deep inside of themselves, their hearts were screaming to be understood as well as heir need of a sense of freedom. Above all, the themes in these stories are the reflection of real struggle of women in their marriage. Even though it is not explain in the story, Mrs. Mallard perhaps had to encounter a lot discouragement and affliction in her marriage in order to feel that only with Mr. Mallard death, she would be free. A sense of freedom that was stronger than the sadness she felt from this news. ââ¬Å"Free! Body and soul free! â⬠She kept whisperingâ⬠(Chopin, 68. ). Today, despite of a lot of women, they donââ¬â¢t feel treated, as they wanted by their spouses; they continue in ilence, struggling in their marriage enduring maltreatment and restrained themselves from the pleasure of doing what they dreamed one day for their life. However, in ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠the woman did not have a voice, she loved her husband too and appreciated all what he did for her, she suffered to know that whatever she said or did was never enough for him. ââ¬Å"John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies himâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all ver the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it. (Gilman, 86- 87. ). For this woman to feel underappreciated by her husband, may have been more depressing than her own nervous condition. It is fair to say that the themes of this story it is also relate to the fact that many women in all cultures of our society, become victims of their circumstance, and they lose the control of their life when their husbands do not look at them as human beings that are capable of going beyond of their gendersââ¬â¢ identity. For the most part, the characters in both of tories go along in the theme of discouragement in their marriage. To conclude, ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaper and The Story of an Hourâ⬠we now agree that the realism is shown in the plot, characterization, setting, and the theme of both stories. Also, we can see that both characters share the same concerned to their reader, they want women around the world to have self-expression, freedom to be themselves. They believed that women, not only deserve a good house and furniture, but they do also deserve respects. Gilman and Chopin with these work portray themselves as faithful believer n women ââ¬Ëcapacities and do not support any physical or mental mistreatment to them.
